11th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium Short-video Competition

We are proud to launch the video competition in connection with the 11 th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium which will take place on 1-6 July 2019 at the University of Mauritius, Mauritius

Competition rules

      1. Who can enter

Participation is open to professionals and beginners, regardless of age, country or language, however, submitted videos must be taken in the Western Indian Ocean region.

     2. Language

Videos can be submitted in English, French or Portguese. French and Portguese videos could include English sub-titles.

     3. Duration

The videos will have a maximum length of 5 minutes.

     4. Themes

The theme for the video competition is “People, Coasts and Oceans: Opportunities for a changing future”. However the subject of the videos can address any topic of your choice related to coastal people and efforts to improve the sustainable use and management of coastal resources, ecosystems, landscapes, seascapes, science, research and its impact on coastal communities, climate change or any other scene from marine and coastal environment in the region, both above and under the ocean surface!

      5. Prizes:

  • 1st Prize USD 500
  • 2nd Prize USD 250
  • 3rd Prize USD 150

      6. Judging Criteria

  • Contribution to WIOMSA’S Objectives and research priorities
  • Consistency with the theme
  • Pertinence
  • Visual aesthetics.
  • Quality and originality (of approach and narrative perspective).
  • Conceptual consistency and clarity of the message.
  • Focus and reach of the message (specification of the public or publics addressed, etc.).

      7. Format.

Digital media in one of the following formats: .MOV; .MPEG4; .AVI; .WMV; .MPEGPS; .FLV; .3GPP; .WebM

       8. Presentation

Those interested in participating in the Competition must send an e-mail to the secretary@wiomsa.org, with the following information:

  • Complete name and contact of the author/s of the video.
  • Title and date of production of the video.
  • Indicate if the video has been submitted for evaluation to other competitions or awarded a prize in other competitions. In this case the video is not eligible for a win but will be included in a competition for an Honour Mention.
  • Short abstract of the topic covered by the video, and data sheet including language, duration, format, etc.
  • Declaration of authorship. By submitting their video to the competition, the author/s automatically declare to be authors of the work and that it is not subject to any third-party property rights. WIOMSA reserves the right to exclude from the competition those videos that do not comply with this requirement, at any moment, including after the final decision if any evidence emerges of anomalies with regard to the work’s property rights. The author/s are fully responsible for any problems caused by violations to authors’ rights in their videos.
  • After receiving this document, we will inform the authors how to transfer the video file online.

Deadline for submission of videos is 15th June 2019
